Solar Materials and Design

Photovoltaic Panels

The panels are made of silicon or sand.  Then there are some chemicals used to treat the panels and make it work.  The panels are encased in glass.  
The casing is usually made of metal.  Aluminum is a popular choice.

Thermal Panels

Thermal panels use polypropylene tubing, PVC, and copper tubing.  The outer part is made of glass.  The casing is usually aluminum or wood 2 * 4. The backing of the tubing can often be aluminum sheeting painted black.
