Wind Power
A lot of solar enthusiasts also like wind power. The reason is that wind power gets you off the grid and that is the main goal. For a lot of solar systems, it is difficult to get enough power to go completely off grid. For that reason, a lot of people, especially in rural areas, go for a combination of solar panels and wind power. The combination of the two is a very common and effective way to be energy independent.
Years ago, there were small wind powered turbines you could purchase for homes. The wind turbines would cost around ten thousand dollars. In most residential areas, today, you can't just put up a tall windmill because it is against zoning regulations. This is something that would need to change for wind power to catch on in urban areas.
