Solar Water Purification
The suns UV rays are great at killing bacteria, in water. In some less developed nations, they simply put clear plastic water bottles out into the sun to sterilize the water. Nowadays, there are solar water purification kits that are able to harness UV rays to purify water.
In the event of an emergency, having clean drinkable water is important for survival. Most people should have at least a two week supply of water for their family. Most people do not have that much stored water. In any case, having a way to purify water is very important for survival. If you are really thirsty, you can probably hike to a stream or reservoir and get water. Then, being able to purify the water, without boiling it, will save you a lot of time.
