Solar Inverters
A solar power system or solar array will run on direct current. That is the same type of current that regular batteries operate on. The problem is that everything, in your home, runs on alternating current. That means that the direct current should be converted into alternating current. How is the process accomplished? You guessed it! A power inverter.
To choose a power inverter, you may first, of all, notice that they are quite expensive. It is similar to buying a transformer for electricity. You can't go over a certain voltage limit. That means that the inverter can never produce above a certain amount of power. So, here is a serious question to ask yourself, "Will I ever need more power than I think I do." If the answer is yes, than you should get an inverter with some extra capacity. That way, when you want to expand your solar array all you need to do is to add some photovoltaic panels and that is much easier than replacing an inverter and more cost effective.
A good way to estimate is to look at your power bills. They will tell you how much power you use throughout the year. You should take the highest bills you have and consider that you will need more power than that. Why? For one thing, appliances, like furnaces and air conditioners, are less efficient, as they age and that means they will use more power. Do you want a new computer or television? Each new appliance can add more required power to your home needs. One thing that can happen is that you may have additional children or have more people come and stay with you. All these things add up to more power than you thought you would need. So, as a general rule, get an inverter than can handle at least 30% more power than your highest utility bill. And, if you can afford it, get an inverter than has double the capacity. Your friend, the sun, will thank you.
