CIGS is called cadmium indium gallium selenide and is the latest in thin film technology because it produces higher efficiency rates than cadmium telluride or amorphous silicon (the predecessors). The main company to watch is Google backed Nanosolar. Some other thin film companies are Miasole and Heliovolt. The important thing about thin film technology was to get it on par with traditional cryastalline panels and now through CIGS it is being accomplished. However, the future is very unclear because so many companies are claiming large improvements in their technology. The part that can be forgotten is that most of these types of startups will not be able to put their product into mass production. That is a whole other process that requires a lot of expertise in a wide variety of areas.
